about Ables

Ables is an exciting monthly event for people of all abilities to get together and have fun. It provides a safe and enjoyable place for people to dance, meet other people and enjoy themselves. Ables has been creating good times, long lasting relationships and a good time since August 2014. We have had thousands of people come along and enjoy a night out in town.

Ables has seen people gain confidence in themselves, and really come out of their shell. We have seen people falling in love, people who once thought they would never have someone special in their life. We have even had a number of successful marriage proposals from people who met at Ables. Ables is an inclusive nightclub for people of all abilities. Everyone is welcome and invited to Ables – people of all abilities, friends, parents, carers, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunties, uncles – anyone and everyone!

For more information, and a gallery of heaps of photos from every event, go to our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/AblesWollongong.

Security is there on the night to ensure the venue is safe and friendly. We have held training sessions with the venue security to ensure they are confident of the best way to ensure people have a good night. Ables is not part of any one organisation. It is an opportunity for all organisations to support something that has been missing in the Illawarra & wider community for too long.

“The idea for Ables came about through the lack adult social activities for people with disabilities in main stream venues. My idea was to create a night out for people of all abilities just like any other night out. Night outs that so many of us take for granted. We have seen people travel up from Nowra to Wollongong and stay overnight just to attend Ables. One lady has caught two trains down from Cronulla to get down to Wollongong for an Ables event. She would tell us how much she loved coming and how there was just nothing like it anywhere else. With Ables in the Illawarra being such a success, our aim over is to establish more Ables events in more city's in NSW and even Australia.”

"Ables was born out wanting to find a way for people with disabilities to have a fun night out and meet new friends. It is a public event held in a public venue and is open to anyone and everyone. I had no idea how huge Ables would become. Since starting in August 2014 we have hundreds of people come along to Ables monthly events and have heaps of fun. We rotate between Night Club and Karaoke events and at each event there is standing room only. Words can’t describe the feeling of looking around Ables and seeing a room full of people that are hanging out with old friends, or maybe meeting new friends, in a way that many other people take for granted. There has even quite been a few people meet someone special as well. I get goose bumps watching someone on stage at the Karaoke night singing with well over a hundred people singing along with them. The Night Club events always have a packed dance floor. I DJ the Night Club events and the crowd is one of the most enthusiastic crowds to play for. As far as I can tell, Ables is the only regular public event in the world. Now Ables is so successful in Wollongong, I reckon it may be time to share it with more people."
